Women’s 5K Training/Support Group - Improve your emotional and physical health in a supportive group setting. Meet twice monthly, with a group of like minded women to train together for a local 5K race. Each exercise training session will be followed by a support group addressing some of the following topics: making time to care for yourself, self esteem, maintaining a positive attitude, body image, and dealing with depression and anxiety. The specific topics covered will be determined by the needs and interests of each group.

Support Groups - Heather and Ralph have experience leading support groups for people with chronic diseases and their caregivers, support groups for survivors of sexual abuse and bereavement support groups. Please contact Human Service Associates if you are interested in having them lead a support group for your organization or if you would like to participate in a support group.

Are you a caregiver for an elderly parent, spouse with a chronic illness or a child with special needs? If so, you already know the toll that care giving can take on you emotionally and physically. In this workshop you will learn the skills necessary to keep your life in a healthy balance while continuing to care for your loved one. Taking good care of yourself will increase the energy and compassion you have in your care giving role. This workshop can be tailored to meet the needs of a specific group and can range from a 30 minute information session to a 2 hour interactive workshop.

Presenter:   Heather C. Brewer, LCSW, ACSM Certified Exercise Specialist Heather has over 15 years experience working with people dealing with chronic diseases and their caregivers. She has had the opportunity to assist people with heart disease, pulmonary disease, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, dementia as well as stroke survivors and amputees.

# Spirituality and Health

In this half day interactive workshop participants will learn about the most recent scientific literature that studies the role our spiritual beliefs and behaviors have on our health. Participants will explore the differences and similarities in religion and spirituality and how both impact emotional and physical health. There will be the opportunity for reflection on individual spiritual beliefs and how they have influenced the health of the participant. This workshop will also provide the participants with ways to practice their spirituality on a more daily basis.

# Stress Management for a more balanced life

Stress is necessary in life and can be a positive force that creates personal growth and resilience. Stress can also become overwhelming and negatively impact our emotional and physical health if we do not have positive coping skills. In this workshop, participants will learn the physiology of stress and understand specifically what happens in the body when it is under prolonged stress. With this understanding, participants will then explore techniques to deal with stress in a more positive way and develop a plan to integrate these techniques into their daily life. This workshop can be tailored to meet the needs of a specific group and can range from an hour lecture to a full day retreat.

Heather has master’s degrees in social work and exercise physiology which makes her uniquely qualified to lead this workshop exploring the physiology of stress and its impact on physical and emotional health.

# The Role of Exercise in Promoting Mental Health

In this workshop participants will be exposed to the most recent scientific literature studying the relationship between exercise and mental health. They will gain an understanding of the role exercise can play in creating mental health and then explore possible physiological and psychological mechanisms for this interaction. Finally, participants will be advised on how to begin a safe exercise program and be provided with motivation tips for adhering to their exercise plan. This workshop can be tailored to meet the needs of a specific group and can range from a 30 minute information session to a two hour interactive workshop. In addition, this workshop can be designed specifically for mental health professions who wish to integrate exercise into their clinical practice.

# Envisioning Your Future: Creating Joy, Purpose and Health in the Next Stage of Your Life

This workshop is targeted to people at a juncture in their life who are looking for a new direction. Participants will create a vision for what they would like to achieve in the next stage of their life, learn techniques to tap into their inner wisdom and learn practical ways to implement their new vision without getting sidetracked by their responsibilities or life long habits. The workshop is a combination of lecture, group discussion and writing. “Envisioning Your Future” can be formatted as a two hour workshop or expanded to a weekend retreat that would include additional activities such as walking, yoga, meditation and kayaking.
